Wasted Day

Well that’s a drag. I waited and waited, and finally my co-travelers were ready to go out at about 2:30. We jumped on a tram and rode it across the river into town - and found out that we took the wrong tram. Lots of walking in a cold drizzle.

This is a seriously grungy place

Not sure if a bomb hit here, but it sure looks like it

Anyway, they wanted to stop to eat, so by the time we got to the old part of town it was getting dark

So I didn’t really see anything.
You really have to be wary here. There are a lot of people who hate USA, and blame us for all of their problems. Most people are really nice, but there are enough angry ones to make it kind of creepy.
I think I’ll get up early tomorrow and go see some stuff. I hate wasting my day waiting for people who stayed up partying the night before. One day, maybe I will travel with people who like to walk around and see stuff.

Damn, I’m tired. That was a pretty long flight...
We are staying at the Hyatt Regency Belgrade, which happens to be on Milentija Popovica Street, thank you very much. We got in and rested for a while, then went looking for something to eat. The only things we could find were coffee/desert places and McDonald’s. Needless to say (but I’ll say it anyway) McDonald’s sucks here, too.
The view from my hotel room, Soviet slabs in all their glory:

It is FREAKING COLD here!
It looks like there might be a plethora of things here to feed my insatiable fascination with all things post-Soviet, and the people are pretty nice - most of them speak at least a little bit of English.
A word of warning: If you are looking forward to me waxing poetic about finally visiting the land where my father’s father came from, I am afraid you will go away disappointed. It won’t happen. The bottom line is that I just don’t care. Seriously. I am - by far - the least sentimental person any of you will ever have the opportunity of meeting. The only thing that might tie into that whole “Motherland” thing is my personal curiosity as to why old Rade would choose a life of miserable, dangerous, low-paying labor (and black lung to boot) in a country where he was considered a filthy expendable alien, rather than stay here. This place must really be the pits, I guess. I just haven’t seen it yet.
Anyway, I start work tomorrow and I am going to sleep.
Cheers
